A világ egyik legzsúfoltabb metrórendszerében nyom nélkül eltűnik egy utasokkal teli metrószerelvény, csak a kerekek kattogó hangja szűrődik ki halványan az alagútrendszerből. Az üzemeltetésért felelős igazgató felkéri a rendszert tervező iroda egyik munkatársát, hogy segítsen az elvesztett vonat felkutatásában. Mielőtt azonban a fiatal matematikus végére járhatna a rejtélynek, újabb váratlan esemény történik.
