A II. világháború idején egy amerikai romboló és egy német tengeralattjáró küzd egymással azt követően, hogy mind a ketten tudomást szereztek a másik jelenlétéről a nyílt vízen. A két kapitány egymás eszén túljárva próbálja a másikat ellehetetleníteni, több-kevesebb sikerrel. A legénység mindkét oldalon izgatottan figyeli az eseményeket, de a kapitányok szavaiban vakon bízva teljesítik a parancsot, akár az életük árán is.
