A regény egy angol papról szól, aki első ránézésre kissé szerencsétlennek látszik ugyan, valójában azonban nagyon okos és kitűnő emberismerettel rendelkezik. Az atya a történet során több bűnüggyel is találkozik, de mindegyiket sikerül megoldania az említett tulajdonságait segítségül hívva. A történet egyszerre humoros és lebilincselő, a mű főhőse pedig a szerző felnőtt korában megtalált keresztény hitét tükrözi.
