A Föld tartalékai kimerülőben vannak. Az emberiség túlélése azon múlik, hogy az Alpha 1-et sikerül-e gyarmatosítani. Ez pedig a Hyper-kapu építésének sikeres befejezésén múlik, amit a terroristák megpróbálnak elfoglalni. A munkálatokat vezető tudós, Robinson (William Hurt) a családjával hosszú űrútra indul, hogy az Alpha 1 közelében részt vegyen a csillagkapu megépítésében. Csakhogy a terroristák szabotálják a küldetést, megpróbálják elpusztítani a Robinson családot. Ez nem sikerül, de az űrhajó eltéved az űrben.
