Based on Christopher Andersen's unauthorized "tell-all" book, "Madonna : Innocence Lost, the Early Years" was originally broadcast on FOX-TV in late 1994. A guilty pleasure for many, this TV-film aims at retracing Madonna's early rise from rags to ritches, from 1978 to 1984.
Gorgeous newcomer Terumi Matthews does everything she can to convince the audience she *is* Madonna (not exactly an easy role to play), and if chutzpah and charisma count for something, makes a very good job at it.
The soundtrack (inspired by Madonna's early music and produced by multiple awards winners Louis Natale and Tony Shimkin, who worked on Madonna's EROTICA album) doesn't pale in comparison with some of the early demos of the queen of pop. "Let It Go" in lieu of "Everybody" is a rather catchy song, "Much Too Much" is a dead-ringer for Emmy's "Bells Ringing", and "Heaven" makes for a convincing (although achronological) stand for "Angel".
Until Madonna's self-penned biopic gets filmed and released (2024? If ever...), revisit Madonna's early shenanigans (mostly completely made up) with this amusing and entertaining film, presented here restored to HD, sourced from the promotional UK DVD.
But who will be cast as Madonna in her biopic ?
Will Terumi Matthews remain the ultimate Madonna ersatz ?
Can anybody else clench her jaws like she does ?
Will Madonna's film have lines as good as "𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘕𝘖𝘛 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳!" or "𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘴, 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘊𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦" ?
Could they have cast a child actor looking less like young Madonna ?
And whoever will portray Madonna's first manager Camille Barbone in Madonna's upcoming biopic, chances are she won't be as good as Wendie Malick.
Directed by Bradford May, starring Terumi Matthews ("The Sticky Fingers Of Time") as Madonna, Jeff Yagher ("V, The Visitors") as Dan Gilroy, Wendie Malick ("Just Shoot Me") as Camille Barbone, Dean Stockwell ("Quantum Leap") as Silvio Ciccone, Diana LeBlanc ("Tales Of the City") as Pearl Lang "Ruth Novak".
Originally broadcast on November 29, 1994 on FOX-TV.

Watch Terumi Matthews portray Madonna once again four years later, in the absolutely awful TV-movie "Bad As I Wanna Be : The Dennis Rodman Story" (1998), restored to "HD".
