A regény főhőse, a hirtelen haragú Görgey Pál vicispán egy ad hoc vadászat alkalmával meglövi a lőcsei bírót, akit egy királyi dekrétumban lefektetett földszerzési jog miatt a vele lévő lőcsei polgárok kivéreztetnek, ugyanakkor a város bosszút esküszik a gyilkos ellen, elöljárói pedig kihirdetik, hogy mindaddig, amíg e sérelmüket meg nem bosszulják, Lőcse város feketében köteles járni.
