Sitting In Limbo (1986) | Canadian Coming-of-Age Drama

Sitting in Limbo is the bittersweet love story of Pat and Fabian, two black teenagers who are struggling to grow up in an alien urban environment. Alternately hilarious and touching, their experiences of coping with school, jobs and slum landlords echo many of the problems of North American youth today. From the start, the odds seem to be stacked against the young lovers. Pat has moved out of home. She's trying to finish high school while living with two girlfriends, both single mothers, when she discovers she's pregnant. Meanwhile, Fabian, the baby's father, has been kicked out of school. Set to the hot, sultry reggae music of Jimmy Cliff, Sitting in Limbo is full of warm, in-timate moments that contrast starkly with the cold winter setting. Film critic Jay Scott ex-pressed it best: "The memory of Pat struggling to hold it together with songs in her heart, tears in her eyes and brains in her head lights up the mind hours after the screen has dimmed."
