A 12 éves Conor (Lewis MacDougall) csodálatos fantáziával és rajztehetséggel megáldott kisfiú. Amikor élete legnagyobb megpróbáltatásával kell szembenéznie, nem akármilyen segítőt kap: egy hatalmas szörny (Liam Neeson) látogat el hozzá éjszakánként, aki fantasztikus történetekkel ébreszti fel a fiúban szunnyadó erőt és bátorságot. Conor végül a mesék és a szörny segítségével nemcsak édesanyja súlyos betegségével, és iskolatársai zaklatásával küzd meg, de a saját félelmeivel, dühével és bűntudatával is.
