In this episode of the CJ Knows Podcast, we sit down with Michael DeLong, the Research and Advocacy Associate for the Consumer Federation of America’s (CFA) Campaign for Fair Auto Insurance. Since joining CFA in April 2020, Michael has been dedicated to conducting research on auto insurance and advocating for practices that protect consumers by making insurance fairer and more affordable. A key focus of his work is combating discrimination in insurance markets.

Michael’s background includes experience as a healthcare and antitrust advocate, where he organized consumer opposition to harmful mergers. He also served as a Legislative Assistant for two Maryland State Delegates, bringing a rich understanding of policy and advocacy to his current role. Michael graduated from Reed College with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 2012.

During our conversation, we explore the Consumer Federation of America’s mission and delve into the specifics of the Campaign for Fair Auto Insurance. Michael sheds light on the reasons behind the recent surge in auto insurance prices and discusses strategies consumers can use to mitigate these costs. We also dive into the controversial topic of driver scoring, examining how auto insurance companies use data from automakers and smartphone apps to monitor driving behavior and the implications for consumer privacy.

Join us as Michael DeLong shares his insights on the current landscape of auto insurance, the challenges of advocating for fair practices, and what consumers can do to protect themselves in an increasingly data-driven world.
