Feröer egy vulkáni eredetű szigetcsoport; Izlandhoz hasonlóan, a Grönlandtól Skóciáig húzódó vulkanikus tenger alatti hátságon emelkedik. Egy 50-60 millió évvel ezelőtt kihunyt hatalmas rétegvulkán maradványa, amelyet gleccserek szabdaltak részekre. A szigetek domborzatát jég formálta, merész sziklagerincek és csúcsok, és köztük széles, U-alakú völgyek jellemzik. A szigeteket alkotó bazaltrétegek kelet felé lejtenek, a nyugati partokon gyakran több száz méter magas sziklafalakat találunk.
